How to Export a Car from US to Dominican Republic: A Complete Guide

Exporting a car to the Dominican Republic is a fantastic way to get a high-quality vehicle for a fraction of the cost of buying locally on the island. However, navigating customs regulations and logistics can be daunting without a guide.
At MPG Auto Sales, we do this every day. Here is the process simplified.

1. Know the Regulations (The 5-Year Rule)
Before you fall in love with a car, make sure it’s legal to import.
- The 5-Year Rule: generally, you can only import passenger vehicles that are 5 years old or newer. For example, in 2025, you can import vehicles from model year 2020 and up.
- Exceptions: There are exceptions for classic cars, heavy machinery, and diplomatic vehicles, but for standard daily drivers, the 5-year rule is strict.
2. Purchase and Title Transfer
You cannot export a car without a "Clean Title" (or a Rebuilt title that is cleared for export).
- Buying from MPG: When you buy from us, we ensure the title helps, not hinders, the export process.
- Title Transfer: We handle the transfer to your name immediately so there are no delays at the port.
3. Shipping Options: RoRo vs. Container
You have two main choices for getting the car to the port of Haina or Caucedo.
- RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off): The car is driven onto the ship and parked. This is usually the cheapest and fastest option. You cannot store personal items inside the car.
- Container Shipping: Your car is loaded into a secure container. This is more expensive but offers better protection and allows you to ship personal goods alongside the vehicle.
4. Customs Clearance (Aduanas)
This is the most critical step. Upon arrival, the vehicle goes to a bonded warehouse.
- Valuation: Customs verifies the value of the car (often using the "Libro Azul" or NADA guides).
- Paying "La Primera Placa": You must pay the import taxes (gravámenes), the fee for the first license plate, and ITBIS.
- Broker: We strongly recommend usng a licensed customs broker (agente aduanal) to handle this paperwork to avoid fines or delays.
At MPG Auto Sales, we offer a turnkey service. You pick the car, and we can handle everything up until it arrives at the port, and even connect you with trusted brokers in the DR.
