Buying a Car Without a Social Security Number in the US: 2025 Guide

Moving to a new country is hard enough without the added stress of figuring out transportation. In Miami, a car is essential. But what if you don't have a Social Security Number (SSN)?
One of the most common myths we hear is that you need an SSN to buy or finance a car in the US. This is simply not true.
At MPG Auto Sales, we help hundreds of expats, international students, and new residents purchase vehicles every year.
Can I Really Finance Without an SSN?
Yes. Many lenders specialize in "Foreign National" or "ITIN" programs. They understand that just because you are new to the country doesn't mean you aren't financially responsible.
The Documents You DO Need
Since you can't provide an SSN for a credit check, lenders need other ways to verify your identity and ability to pay.
- Valid Passport: This serves as your primary photo ID. It must be unexpired.
- Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN): While not always mandatory for every lender, having an ITIN letter from the IRS opens up more financing options.
- Proof of Income: You need to show you can afford the monthly payments. Bank statements (last 3 months) showing deposits or a Job Offer Letter are usually required.
- Proof of Residence: A utility bill (FPL, water), lease agreement, or phone bill in your name.
- References: Some banks ask for 3-5 personal references (friends, family, or coworkers) in the US.
Down Payment Expectations
Because the lender is taking a slightly higher risk by financing someone with no US credit history, you should be prepared to pay a higher down payment.
- Expect to put down 20% to 35% of the vehicle's price.
- This significantly increases your chances of approval and lowers your monthly payment.
Building Your Credit
The best part? Buying a car this way is often the first step to building your US credit score. Many of our lenders report your on-time payments to the credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion), helping you establish a score for future purchases like a house or credit cards.
